A WORD FROM YOUR MINISTRY
To consider how the grid/structure of a building can be translated into a book.
The building I chose was the Senate House Library. I found out that The Senate House was home to the Ministry of Information in WWII, and that George Orwell worked there for some time in the propaganda department. After this work Orwell's view on propaganda had changed, and his experiences partly inspired him to write 1984.
I created a book containing quotes from 1984 that explain Big Brother's philosophy, but covering them up with cut-outs resembling the windows and structure of the Senate House, only selectively showing a propaganda message. My intention is to show that propaganda is just selectively showing the positive from a political agenda that may unknowingly be much more grim.
